Massage Therapy (RMTs)

what is a registered massage therapist?

Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) in British Columbia are health care professionals committed to restoring and maintaining optimal health and pain-free function of the body. RMTs in British Columbia are required to take a three thousand hour program over three years. This rigorous course is the highest standard of massage therapists in North America and most of the world. On average, massage therapists in British Columbia take six times more training than state requirements for the United States. RMTs are educated and trained to accurately assess and treat clients with techniques that include massage and manual therapy, joint mobilization, hydrotherapy, and rehabilitative exercise such as stretching, strengthening, postural exercise and patient education. Massage therapy is an effective approach to pain management and rehabilitation. RMTs are effective in treating and providing relief for a wide range of conditions such as migraine headaches, tendonitis, arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, as well as many other common conditions related to soft tissue and joint dysfunction.

If you have any questions about what an RMT can do for you, contact us or simply drop by our office.

Who qualifies for massage coverage?

Because Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are BC heath care providers, you may qualify for provincially subsidized premium assistance.

If you have recently been in a motor vehicle accident, you may qualify for treatment massage.

If you are an aboriginal of BC, you qualify for premium assistance.

If you have extended health care benefits, you may be covered through a private insurer.

If you are an RCMP officer or a Veteran, you will be covered by Blue Cross.

Those with WCB claims may also qualify.

Spa Practicioner

What is a Spa Practicioner?

The Spa Practitioner holds a one year certificate from Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy (OVCMT) with a minimum training of one thousand hours. They have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide a variety of spa services, as well as multiple massage techniques including Swedish massage, hot stone massage, and many more holistic techniques.

OVCMT has created a program that trains the Spa Practitioner to have knowledge of specific applications and contraindications of massage techniques. This allows the Spa Practitioner to elevate services provided to the public. This program also allows the student to return to year two of a massage therapy program, if at some time his or her career aspirations change.

Many of Crave Massage’s Spa Practitioners are in their second and third year of education. Crave also employs massage practitioners from other provinces and countries, but requires a minimum of one thousand hours from a registered school of massage.

At Crave Massage, we work together as a community of wellness providers. We believe that which is not taught and shared is lost, and that we shall treat everyone as though they have something we can learn.

Your First Visit

Meet & Greet

When you arrive at Crave Massage, our front desk receptionist will greet you and ask you to fill out a client form. The client form asks you to record any medical history, past/present injuries and other physical conditions we should be made aware of.

The appropriate clinician will greet you and review the Client Form with you. They will inquire about the reason(s) you are coming for a massage, your current physical condition and any specific areas in which you are experiencing pain or would like addressed during your massage to best suit your needs.

The Treatment Room

Your RMT or SP will take you to a peaceful treatment room where a comfortable massage table dressed with a warming blanket and crisp clean sheets awaits. A small shelf for your personal belongings and a chair are also provided for your use. Your RMT or SP will leave the room and wait outside while you disrobe to your level of comfort. Some clients prefer to completely disrobe, while some will remain partially clothed.

Once disrobed, you will lie on the massage table, under the top sheet. Your RMT or SP will give you a few minutes for this process and will knock on the door to ask if you are ready before entering your room. You will always be draped with the top sheet during your massage session and an additional blanket is available at your request. Your RMT or SP will only uncover the part of the body they are working on, ensuring that your modesty is respected at all times.

You can expect a tranquil and comfortable environment during your massage. The massage table is padded and a heating blanket is placed beneath the sheet, which you can have adjusted to your preference. There will be relaxing music playing, unless you request otherwise, and the room will be quiet with no outside distractions.

Your Needs First

Before beginning the session, your therapist or practitioner will ask you to alert them if, at any time during the session, a technique or stroke they are using is uncomfortable. Depending on your specific needs or requests, your massage therapist will either perform a customized full-body massage (for general relaxation and stress reduction) or focus on the specific parts of your body that you have requested. Crave Massage uses only the highest quality specially formulated organic massage creams and lotions during your treatment.

To Paradise and Back

Once your massage session is completed, your clinician will leave the room so you may re-dress. Your RMT or SP will wait outside the room for you, and then take you back to the front area. Our massage sessions are one hour in length. This time includes a five minute pre-interview, fifty minutes of hands-on time and five minutes at the end for you to re-dress. We look forward to seeing you on your next visit, and any questions you may have will gladly be answered by reception or your therapist.

Spa Etiquette

Booking Procedure

Crave Massage requires a valid credit card number when booking a service. Crave Massage has a twenty-four hour notice cancellation policy that is strictly enforced. On the chance that you do not arrive for your appointment or you cancel your appointment within the twenty-four hour time frame, the full cost of the massage will be charged to your credit card, membership or gift card that is on file. We accept all major credit cards, cash and gift certificates purchased through Crave.

Arrival Time

We ask that you arrive fifteen minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time, allowing for an enjoyable, relaxing massage. Arriving late will interfere with your massage time, so the massage may not be as effective or therapeutic for you. Late arrivals will end as scheduled in consideration of our next guests.

All spa services and treatments do not include gratuities; 10-15% is customary.

Cell Phones

In consideration of the other guests, please turn your cell phone to silent while in the spa facility.

What to Wear

All clients will remain draped in linens throughout the course of the massage. You can disrobe to your level of comfort; some clients prefer to completely disrobe, while others will remain partially clothed. For pedicures, please bring flip flops.

Waiting Room

In consideration of other guests, we ask voice levels be kept low. Crave Massage is a quiet and still environment to help you relax and rejuvenate. We keep water on hand for all guests!

It is Crave Massage's goal to employ therapists who feel fulfilled. For many that means being able to sustain a private practice or work in an alternate setting. We are happy to extend a part-time employment invitation to all Massage Therapists in private practice. You don't have to give up your clientele to work with other professionals and supplement your income. Therapists interested in full-time employment will find Crave Massage to be a fantastic home, as our clinics are open eighty hours a week, taking full advantage of the times clients have available for massage. Additionally, the responsibility of therapists is simply to give clients a wonderful experience. A full-time opportunity with Crave Massage means massage only - no billing, booking, filing, or marketing. Oftentimes this industry loses tremendously talented therapists who give up massage because they cannot meet their income requirements, or they don't have enough time to operate the office and do the bodywork. We are proud to have a home for all therapists. We offer consistent clientele, steady income and a professional environment where all of the supplies are furnished. All therapists with Crave Massage are employees, not independent contractors. In this manner we can provide our therapists with the same peace of mind that other professionals expect - the tax burden is shared by the employer.
